Remezcla.com and MySpace Latino’s En Tu Ciudad Tour, a concert series featuring diverse up-and-coming local Latino musical acts around the country continues in May with a show in Chicago. Just in time to warm things up for summer, this next installment of En Tu Ciudad Tour, sponsored by Toyota Matrix, will take place on Friday, May 8th 2009 at The Bottom Lounge with live performances by Making Movies, Los Vicios de Papá, Saber and DJ Chavez. The show will be free and open to the public. The tour kicked off in Austin in February and future dates include stops in Miami and Los Angeles through the summer.
Headlining the Chicago stop of En Tu Ciudad is the rock en español band Making Movies. Panamanian-born, Kansas City-bred lead singer Enrique Chi grew up jamming with his dad Enrique Sr. and siblings to artists such as Juan Luis Guerra, The Police, Peter Gabriel, and of course, Rubén Blades. From those early sessions, Making Movies evolved into the bilingual, cosmopolitan pop-rock group it is today. Even though the band’s debut EP Tierra Firme, came out only last year, they have already landed gigs at Fiesta del Sol and opening for Latin alternative legends Aterciopelados at Chicago’s House of Blues. Look out for Making Movies’ first full length-album this summer.
Los Vicios De Papá are an 8-member musical collective that fuses traditional ska and reggae with Latin rythms such as cumbia, cha cha cha with socially-conscious lyrics that speak about their experience as Latinos from the South Side of Chicago. And their activism doesn’t end in their lyrics: Los Vicios de Papá are involved in organizations such as Chiapas Media Project, Student Farmworker Alliance and have performed at benefits such as Concert For Fair Food, where they shared the stage with Zack de la Rocha and Tom Morello from Rage Against The Machine, among others.
Originally, lead singer Frank Delamora (formerly of popular band Echonine) and DJ Eddie Riot formed Saber as side project to explore their love of synth and modern electronica. Just last year, the duo decided to form a full band, adding drummer Sebastion Vasquez (originally from Mexico City), and guitarist Miguel Lopez (Frank’s cousin). After meeting Charly Garcia (DJ and visual artist), founder of Chicago’s FMEL Festival (Festival Musica Electronica), Frank invited Charly to join Saber as its fifth member. The result is a dance-oriented, Depeche Mode, U2 and Justice-influenced group with powerful, lively visual projections.
DJ Chavez (aka David Chavez) is a native of Chicago's Logan Square neighborhood. His sound is a mix of pan Latin beats and remixes drawing heavily on traditional influences with electronic elements. As a resident of bars such as ñ, one of Chicago's hippest lounges, DJ Chavez mixes cutting-edge Latin fusion that ranges from cumbia and Latin hip hop to boogaloo and Latin ska.
